Facial Recognition

Book Project

A collaborative group project with Victoria Lisiecka and Sofia Allegrini.

Facial recognition revolutionized how we identify individuals, replacing analog methods such as mug shots and surveillance, known as The Bertillon system. We have compared the initial facial recognition to the type we are more familiar with today on our phones, such as Apple and Smart Homes, and the technological improvements in facial recognition that showed up in between. Additionally, our group is specifically interested in exploring how artists have engaged with facial recognition technology, examining the creative responses to and implications of this powerful tool in art and culture.

Artists and scientists have always been at the forefront of societal shifts and technological advancements, often using new tools and mediums to push boundaries and challenge prevailing norms. As facial recognition technology becomes increasingly prevalent daily, it presents an opportunity for artists to critically engage with its societal implications, biases, and potential pitfalls. Yet, to what extent does facial recognition not invade our privacy?
