The Main Charcater

From 1977–1980, Cindy Sherman created a series of 69 staged black and white photographs known as Untitled Film Stills. In them, she embodies archetypal female characters drawn from 1950s cinema - women who appear vulnerable, dependent, or defined in relation to men.

This project reimagines Sherman’s approach by drawing inspiration from more recent films such as American Psycho, Scarface, and James Bond. In these stories, male characters are consistently portrayed as powerful, fearless, and dominant, while women are relegated to secondary or submissive roles.

By shifting the lens onto stereotypical portrayals of men, this work seeks to expose and critique the persistent gender inequalities embedded in film, media, and popular culture.
