Divine Femininity
Augmented Object
Through using stereotypical feminine craft-making such as sowing and braiding, I wanted to integrate this with the mechanical pieces from a bike break, an object deriving from a male dominated field. These jewellery and accessory pieces are dedicated for women to feel confident, strong, proud and beautiful all at the same time.
Engineering and other mechanical fields have been a male-dominated field for centuries. In an article by Washington post, 250 women working as engineers were interviewed about if they believe there has been a change but majority stated that the situation has not improved at all. In 1970, the percentage of women majoring engineering was less than 1 percent. In 1979, that number was 9 percent. Today with an improved gender equality one would expect a higher percentage, but it has only increased to 21 percent and has remained unchanged since the 2000s.
